Abstract

The banking and information technology (IT) sectors are key drivers of the Indian economy, significantly influencing investment opportunities and financial growth. This study undertakes a comparative and empirical evaluation to support informed decision-making by investors, portfolio managers, and regulators. Using historical financial statements and stock market data of selected listed companies from both sectors, the study adopts a data-driven approach. Descriptive statistics such as mean returns, variance, standard deviation, and Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) are employed to analyze growth and volatility patterns. Financial ratios including debt-to-equity, current ratio, net profit margin (NPM), return on equity (ROE), and return on assets (ROA) are used to assess profitability, liquidity, and solvency. Risk-adjusted performance is evaluated using Sharpe Ratio, Treynor Ratio. Beta analysis and correlation with the Nifty 50 index help measure market sensitivity and distinguish between systematic and unsystematic risk. Trend and regression analyses further examine performance behavior and market volatility. The findings indicate that the banking sector delivers stable returns with lower volatility, while the IT sector offers higher growth potential accompanied by greater risk. The study provides valuable insights into sectoral risk–return dynamics, aiding effective investment selection and portfolio diversification.
